I then rebuilt the bolt with PTG parts, replaced the barrel with a match-grade one, lightly smoothed the galling with emery paper, replaced the trigger, replaced the brass and it's been smooth as silk since. All sorts of junk was in there too, most notably brass whiskers. Nothing helped.Īfter pulling the barrel off, I could see the receiver lug seats were horribly galled. Cleaned the chamber real well, and tried just about everything with the brass trimming, turning, full-length resizing, neck reaming, chamfering, deburring, neck tempering/quenching etc. Measurement and comparison of fire-formed brass and unfired factory cartridge and a headspace GO gauge and SAAMI spec may be helpful.Ī few years back, after several hundred rounds I had a newer rifle receiver start to get quickly and progressively stiffer using multiple-fired brass. Have you greased the rear of the bolt lugs and extraction ramp?Ī check of headspace / headclearance may be helpful. Have you completely cleaned the chamber and bolt recess? Is there any uneven wear on the rear of the bolt lugs? or contact pattern on only one lug?ĭoes the bolt cycle freely without a chambered round? Is there ANY evidence of galling on the rear of the bolt lugs?
